Radical safeguarding toolkit for homelessness

Published: 02/05/2024

The toolkit offers a new approach to safeguarding adults experiencing homelessness and multiple disadvantage, rooted in social justice. It explores principles of power, autonomy, solidarity and accountability in adult safeguarding.

Welcome to the radical safeguarding toolkit for homelessness.

This toolkit has been created by a group of people and practitioners with lived experience of homelessness, institutional detention and/or social care. It was inspired by the pioneering work of Maslaha, an organisation that takes a multi-layered and creative approach, challenging systems of inequality.

These tools are not a safeguarding ‘how to’ guide. Rather, they are intended to activate critical reflection about traditional ways of working in homelessness and social care, and the unintended impacts that can have on the people we support. Our hope is that the toolkit offers accessible, interesting and reflective ways to explore radical principles and anti-oppressive practice.

The toolkit is for everyone who is involved with safeguarding homeless adults, whether based in statutory, voluntary or grassroots organisations and services. It is for social care practitioners, housing and homelessness workers, activists, volunteers and the people who are themselves at the heart of this work.

We hope these resource will inform and inspire radical practice in adult safeguarding – and we invite you to join us in exploring new ways of learning, thinking and working together.
